American flutist Nicole Mitchell and British pianist Alexander Hawkins are two indelible forces.
When jazz critic Peter Margasak interviewed Nicole Mitchell for the liner notes he wrote for Awakening, she had this to say about her music: "I'm always trying to create something that's new and different, something that's going to challenge the listener and make them think." Mitchell is certainly not one to rest on her laurels. She is constantly pushing the boundaries of jazz, both as a musician and as a composer. Mitchell was born in Chicago in 1967. She began playing the flute at the age of 12, and she quickly developed a passion for jazz.
